Year 2

What age can my child start social networking?

As a parent it’s important you know that all social networking platforms (or social networking apps, if on a smartphone) have age limits. Some social networks use technologies that might not be right for some ages, or engage with communities that are made up of people much older than your child.

Year 2's Recommend a Poem

Erin's Recommendation:

White Rabbit

I have a little rabbit

Whose ears are soft as silk.

His eyes are round as saucers

And his coat as white as milk.

My rabbit cannot talk to me.

But only twitch his nose.

I can tell when he is happy

As twitchety-twitch he goes.

Bradley's Recommendation:

By Unkown

It doesn't matter who you are,
Or what you have, or do
If you give of your very best
The best returns to you.
A law of compensation works,
We get just what we earn.
If we love others with our hearts,
We get love in return.
The little things we sometimes do
For others day by day
Return quite unexpectedly
In some peculiar way.

Happy Friday Year 2! Wow I can't believe that it is the end of our first week back of Summer 2! Have you enjoyed poetry week this week and listening to and reading lots of different poems?

Once you have written your poem in your neatest writing with and you are really proud of it, then send it to the Year 2 email address. Miss Holder and I (Miss Patterson) will read them all and then choose a winner to get a prize. Perhaps you could also perform it and send a video in?

Friday's Poem of the Day

Thursday 4th June 2020

Good Morning Year 2,

Today is your final challenge to help you write your poem tomorrow, we can't wait! It has been lovely to see some of your writing from Wednesday's afternoons challenge and we are excited to start putting it into an SJL poem.

Enjoy listening to our poem of the day today.

The Dentist and the Crocodile by Roald Dahl

Thursday's Poem of the Day

Wednesday 3rd June 2020

Hello Fabulous Year 2s,

Have you seen that some of our friends have recommended some poems for us to read above? We so enjoyed reading them and we hope you do too!

We hope you enjoyed your tricky challenges yesterday and you try your best today as well, we know you will! For this afternoon's challenge, your brilliant ideas are going to help write a WHOLE Sir John Lillie Poem! So once you have completed your learning, send it through to the Year 2 email so that your incredible ideas can be included into the SJL poem about being at home during this time.

Today's poem of the day from us can be listened to here - When the World Turned Upside Down, by Margaret Savage:

The day when the world
turned upside down:
when a frown became a smile
and a smile became a frown.

When the mice chased the cats
the cats chased the dogs.
The dogs laughed out loud
at the pink and yellow frogs.

When you went to bed in the daytime
and got up at night.
When birds caught the school bus
and the cows took flight.

When the moon came out
in the middle of the day
and all of the ocean's fish
rolled around in the hay.

When the children ruled the world
and ice cream was for free
and the elephants shrank
to the size of a flea.

When the grass rained lollipops
up to the sky.
When you wanted to laugh
but could only cry.

When magic beans were real
and giants very small,
you would eat spiders legs
so you could creep up the wall.

This all happened when the
world turned upside down
after I went to bed
with a smile - not a frown.

Poem of the Day

Poem of the Day 1

Monday 1st June 2020

Welcome back Year 2!

We hope you had a wonderful and sunny half term, what did you get up to? We hope you have come back with your brains ready for some more learning.

This week is poetry week where we are going to be reading and listening to poems, performing poems and even writing our own poem. During Poetry Week, could you have a look for some different poems and the ones you like, send them to us using our Year 2 email address and we will post these up for everyone to read? Here is one of our favourite poems:

Kindness is cool

When life flies by so very fast,

And it gets busy every day,

Kindness becomes a gift we give

In so many different ways.

Being kind is important,

Every minute, every day,

We show kindness with our smiles,

By what we do and what we say.

When I help a friend that is feeling sad,

or I do an extra chore,

I am spreading kindness everywhere

And soon there will be more!

Monday 11th May 2020

Happy Monday Year 2!

How were your VE day celebrations? Hope you had a fun weekend!

I hope you are ready for a new week with new tricky challenges! For English, spend this morning finishing your Atlantis description. When you have finished, read through it 3 times to check it, here are some tips for you when checking your work:

Read once to check if your sentences make sense. Have you missed any words out? Perhaps read it out loud to your family member so you can hear your sentences.

Read a second time to check for spelling mistakes

Read a third time to improve it - have you used an adjective too many times, could you change one of them? Have you used the conjunction 'and' a lot, can you use another conjunction.

Enjoy your day.

Victory Day in Europe

Victory Day marks the end of World War II in Europe, have a go at some of the acitivites below over the weekend. There is also a quiz below, see how many questions you can get right! Don't forget to send us any pictures of any VE Day activities you do with your family this weekend!

Thursday 7th May 2020

Hello Year 2!

Did you enjoy your tricky challenges yesterday? Did you like learning about our new RE topic, what interesting facts did you find out?

Here are your tricky challenges for today. For English, we would like you to start writing and describing Atlantis but don't rush to finish it as you will have time on Monday to finish your fabulous work. Choose either the tricky, trickier or trickiest page to help you support your writing.

This afternoon, you are going to learn about a very important day, VE Day. VE Day means Victory in Europe Day which celebrates the end of World War 2 in Europe and tomorrow will be 75 years since the end of the war. Choose either the tricky, trickier OR trickiet comprehension to do.

Did you manage to create some bunting to celebrate VE Day? Don't forget to send it to

Tomorrow will be a bank holiday to celebrate VE Day, which means no school! We won't be posting any tricky challenges for you to do so instead spend Friday having a lovely day playing and having fun with your family - have a look above at some VE Day activities you could do. Perhaps on Monday you can let us know what you got up to over the long weekend?

Have a super day and a fantastic 3 day weekend.

Miss Holder and Miss Patterson

Wednesday 6th May 2020

Hello Year 2, hope you had  a lovely sunny Tuesday?!

Have you seen some activities above to celebrate VE Day which is happening on Friday? VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day. It is a very important day as it is a day when we remember the end of World War 2 in Europe in the year 1945. When the war ended, people hung bunting and flags and had a party in the street. We would love to see your bunting so make sure you take a photo of it and send to before Friday.

Enjoy your learning today. This afternoon, there is an RE challenge for you to do. Make sure you spend some time on your English planning as that will help your writing tomorrow!

Tuesday 5th May 2020

Hellooo Year 2!

How were the tricky challenges yesterday? We would love to hear some of your fantastic noun phrases you came up with to describe Atlantis!

Have you seen the toilet roll challenge video on the home learning page?! We all had such fun filming ourselves and Pedro was so clever to put all the videos together into one big film! We have been watching it and giggling alot!

Here are your tricky challenges for today. We hope you enjoy them.

Monday 4th May 2020

Happy Monday Year 2! How were your weekends? We hope you had a lovely time. We had a busy weekend! Miss Patterson spent Sunday making pottery - she created 2 plant pots and some dishes, she now needs to wait for them to dry before she can decorate them. Miss Holder spent Saturday doing a lot of cooking so she could deliver it to her Gran to celebrate her birthday. As she couldn't go inside her Grans house, they celebrated on her doorstep so everyone kept safe!

Here are your tricky challenges for today. For English, we want you to think of some interesting noun phrases to desribe Atlantis. Remember a noun phrase is an adjective and then a noun. For example:

beautiful flower

busy, crowded streets

Have a look at this website to help you and for some noun phrase games.

Have a lovely day. We are off to start the Joe Wicks PE class!

Friday 1st May 2020

Happy Friday Year 2 and Happy 1st of May! Wow I can't beleive we have now started a new month!

Did you enjoy using a thesaurus to find new, interesting words yesterday? We thought you would like that challenge as at school you are always wanting to challenge yourselves and use it to make your noun phrases even better! We hope you enjoy todays English as it is also about using more interesting vocabulary.

How did you get on with the quiz? Which questions weren't you too sure about? Today's Geography this afternoon is linked to the quiz and is looking at the different features (things) you find at the seaside. Don't forget you can use the internet to help you, I always use the search engine Kiddle.

Thank you SO much to those of you who have emailed the Year 2 inbox with photos and messages. It has been so lovely to see what you have been doing. We will put some of the photos up on here so you can see your classmates.

Have a lovely Friday and enjoy this weekend.

Here are your challenges for this morning. This afternoon, we are starting our new Geography topic, The Seaside so here is your quiz to see what you know and what you don't know about the topic. Remember we haven't started this topic yet so if you don't know the answer, use your clever brains to have a guess and don't worry if you make a mistake, remember those mistakes will help us to learn.

We now have our own Year 2 email so if you would like to share a photograph of your amazing learning or something else that you have been doing at home, send it to:

We would LOVE to see it! You can also use this email address if you want to send a message to say hello!

Today for English, you will be writing answers to the questions you wrote yesterday. Think about the story and even listen to it again so that you can write answers that are connected to the book and can think about what Dougal might say.

This afternoon, you have a reading comprehension to do. You can choose either the tricky or trickier challenge or if you REALLY want to challenge yourself, do both!

Miss Patterson's Easter Challenge

Miss Patterson's Easter Challenge 1 Creating the English Rose!
Miss Patterson's Easter Challenge 2 Printing the bottom of celery to make a rose
Miss Patterson's Easter Challenge 3 Scottish Thistle
Miss Patterson's Easter Challenge 4 Welsh Daffodil
Miss Patterson's Easter Challenge 5 English Rose
Miss Patterson's Easter Challenge 6 Irish Shamrock

I hope you like my Easter art creations year 2. I  really enjoyed making them so I thought I'd let you know  how I made the 4 national flowers of the UK.

For the Welsh Daffodil, I dried petals from flowers that I had in a vase. Once they had dried, I stuck them onto the cardboard to create the daffodil flower shape. I then used paint to create the stem.

To make an English Rose, I cut a small amount off the bottom of a celery plant and then using paint, I printed the celery to create the rose shape. I repeated the pattern to make a rose flower crown and then painted on the leaves.

The Scottish thistle was tricky so I thought very hard about what I could do. In the end, I made salt dough from flour, salt and water. Once the dough was made, I moulded the thistle flower shape, leaves and stem and stuck them together. The dough had to dry before I could paint it so I put it in the oven and had to wait 4 hours!

You may have noticed that the Irsh Shamrock is a bit different! A shamrock should be all green, but I decided to use felt tip pens to create a rainbow coloured shamrock as I haven't got a rainbow on my window yet to show my support of the NHS and now I do!
