In science, we are looking at evolution. One of the topics in this is extinction. Using this as inspiration for an art piece we have made a collage picture of one of the most famous extinct animals - the dodo.
First, we did a line drawing of one, then using paper form magazines we used collage techniques to complete the picture. You can see from the pictures below that the results are pretty fantastic!
Welcome back year 6 and we hope you have had a relaxing holiday. Well, it is going to be a different start to the year than we might have expected but we are still ready to get back to learning. All of your online classes will be on the google drive. We will set your work each day and our expectations are that you complete everything that we set for you to do and return where required. We expect you to complete the work by no later than 5 pm and we will be checking throughout the day to see that you are doing your work.
We know that this is not always easy and you may at times have questions for us so please message us in the google classroom if you need help. To make setting work easier we have created classrooms for English and Maths so please make sure that you accept the invitation to join these classes. If we don't see that you have completed any work we will give you a call to see if there is anything that we can do to help you.
Miss Haynes and Mrs Thompson
Hello year 6. We hope that you have been having a relaxing holiday so far and enjoyed spending time with your family. We really wanted to make sure that you had at least a week of relaxing before even thinking about school again. Over this break it would be lovely if you took some time to just recharge your batteries and enjoy some activities such as reading a good book or maybe doing some drawing. Once you feel that you have rested you can then start to think about next term.
In English we will be looking at the work of William Shakespeare - Macbeth to be specific. For the first week back you will be tested on a random selection of the year 3-4 and year 5-6 spelling words (depending on which spelling group you were in) So to prepare have a look in your reading record at the words that you might have gotten wrong and practice those.
We look forward to seeing you in January when you return.
Mrs Thompson and Miss Haynes.
Homework 11th December 2020
Please complete your math's group fraction sheet to be handed in on Wednesday.
This week's spellings are all synonyms of adjectives. Please learn them ready for a test on Thursday. Collect a synonym and antonym for each word. How many can you collect?
Below are this week's spellings. How much time are you spending in practising your words? What method are you using?
Set A | Set B |

This week's spellings are below. In addition to this, there is a maths task for you to complete on the google drive. Remember you need to let us know if you have any problems accessing it on Monday so we can check any issues you may have.

At SJL we take bullying very seriously and for Anti Bullying Week, in year 6, we were so impressed by the mature conversations we had with our classes and how the children were able to share their experiences and thoughts. The theme this year was 'United Against Bullying'. We talked about how we are all different and that that is ok! We created these odd socks to represent our differences. I think you will agree we have quite a talented group of year 6 children who are certainly all very different.
Here are this week's spellings for you to practice. Our expectations are that at the most you get one or two incorrect. In order to do this, you need to make sure that you are taking the time to practice them every day until you can confidently do this. Last week there was a query about the spelling of hindrance. Technically it can be spelt either hinderance or hindrance - the latter is the more common/modern way of spelling it (but note in the verb form is still to hinder).
You also have some maths on the google drive. You must complete this by Wednesday 25th. It is important that you check it over the weekend and let us know on Monday if you have any problems - if you leave it later than this then we will not be able to resolve any issues you have and it will be marked as incomplete. Miss Haynes and I have checked by using a test user that it works so you should have no issues.
Set A | Set B |
natural naughty notice occasion(ally) often opposite ordinary particular peculiar perhaps popular position possess (ion) possible potatoes (potato) |
muscle necessary neighbour nuisance occupy occur opportunity parliament persuade physical prejudice privilege profession programme pronunciation |
Your spellings are listed below. Make sure you learn them over the weekend for our spelling test next week. Please also complete the work on the google drive. If you have any problems logging on to the drive then please let us know so that we can have a look at what the issue is.
Set A | Set B |

These are your spellings for this week. Remember our expectation is that you get only one or two at the most, wrong. It is up to you how you learn them but it is important to practice as much as possible until you know them off by heart.
For math continue to practice your multiplication- even if you have completed our Maths Olympics. Remember, practice makes perfect. In addition to that please complete the task in your classroom in the google drive.

Year 6, as we mentioned on Friday we would like you to make sure that you have learnt the last spellings thoroughly. If you got less than 3 wrong on your spellings then you can practice the next 15 from the year 5/6 spelling list (for B group) or from the 3/4 list (A group). Remember it is your responsibility to learn these words.
Maths - following on from the lesson in multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 continue to practice these skills. Click on the image below and follow the link to go to the BBC bitesize website for instructions on how to do this.
Complete the two activities on that page (the Twinkl one and the Maths-Whizz one). We expect you all to finish these over half term.
Also, take the time to watch the video about Google classroom video below to familiarise yourself with using it as we will start using this more after half term.
Have a lovely and restful half term and be safe.
Mrs Thompson, Miss Haynes, Angela, Clare and Gina.

This week's spellings are the last of the year 3-4 spellings that we are reviewing and we will then start on the year 5-6 words. Remember, if you got 5 or more wrong on the test then you need to make sure you focus on those words and we will be retesting you on them as well as revisiting these words again later int he year for those who need more practice.

In history, we are continuing to research into our topic of WW2. Our next piece of writing will be centred on the evacuation of children from the cities in the UK. Click on the images below to watch some videos about the evacuation to see what you can find out.
Your spellings from this week are as follows. Remember if you got less that 20 on the last tests you need to practice the words that you got wring as we will continue to test you on them until you can confidently do all the year 3-4 spellings.
interest island knowledge learn length library material medicine mention minute natural naughty notice |
occasion(ally) often opposite ordinary particular peculiar perhaps popular position possess (ion) possible potatoes |
In addition to your spellings, continue to carry on with your WW2 research. We have been looking into the Blitz this week. What additional facts can you find out to add to your information sheet. Following on from this we will be looking at the evacuation of children from major cities due to the Blitz.
This week we continue to practice the year 3-4 spellings. Remember to get someone to test you on your spellings as the more your practice the better you will get at them.

We are continuing to do our times tables tests. It is so important that you carry on practising them until you know them all off by heart and so that you can recall all of them accurately and quickly. This is a skill that will help greatly in your maths.
This week we would like you to learn the first 25 words from the year 3-4 spellings. You will need to make sure you know all of these as well as the year.

We will also be starting our new topic WWII this term so we would like you to do some research. We suggest that you use this website to help you with your research.

To start this year we thought we would have a go at creating our portraits using line drawings and collage. We think they cane out rather well don't you?
Over the last few days, the year 6 team have been busy getting things ready at school and we are all eagerly awaiting your return. This year as you already know there is Mrs Thompson in 6T working with Angela, Miss Haynes in 6H working with Gina, and Clare will be working across the two classes. When you arrive on Monday morning we will all be awaiting your arrival in the playground and can't wait to see you. Remember all you need to bring is a water bottle with your name written clearly on it. Please do not bring in a school bag or anything else (unless you are bringing in your pack lunch). We hope you have a relaxing final week of the holiday.
Your very excited year 6 team!
Below are lots of documents, PowerPoints and tests that you can do in the run up to SATs.
Each one is linked to learning we have done in class and will help you to revise for you SATs.
There is a mix of Maths, Reading and SPaG which will look at revising key concepts and then testing you on them.
There are answers where these are needed but please do not look at these until you have completed the activity.
Enjoy Year 6
